Hackensack Meridian Health Leverages Google Cloud AI to Enhance Patient Care
Hackensack Meridian Health expands AI-driven clinical note summarization to 12 specialties and introduces new AI agents for administrative tasks, reducing physician burnout and improving patient outcomes.
Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH), New Jersey's largest health network, has announced the deployment of new AI agents built with Google Cloud's generative AI technologies. These advancements aim to enhance patient care and operational efficiency across its 18 hospitals and 500 clinical care sites.
Key Developments
-
Clinical Note Summarization: HMH has become the first health system to deploy an AI agent built on Gemini at scale. This agent now supports 12 specialties and is used by over 7,000 clinicians. Since its rollout in June 2025, it has helped generate more than 17,000 summaries, significantly reducing "pajama time"—hours spent on administrative tasks after hours—and alleviating physician burnout.
-
NICU Nurse Agent: A specialized AI tool provides NICU nurses with instant access to the latest best practices and policies, ensuring high-quality care for fragile newborns.
-
Lab Values Summarization Agent: This AI agent summarizes lab results, highlights key trends, and generates preventive care recommendations, enabling primary care physicians to communicate findings to patients more efficiently.
Leadership Insights
"We're not just adopting AI; we're establishing a blueprint for the next generation of value-based care," said Sameer Sethi, SVP and Chief AI Officer at HMH. "AI is like a giant microscope, uncovering insights in data to proactively offer the right care at the right time."
Aashima Gupta, Global Director of Healthcare Strategy & Solutions at Google Cloud, praised HMH's approach: "Their strategic deployment of purpose-built AI addresses healthcare's systemic crises, from clinician well-being to patient journey discontinuity."
Future Plans
HMH plans to expand AI into clinical decision support, leveraging Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform and Gemini models to analyze patient data for predictive diagnostics and prognostic indicators.
