Microsoft Releases Open-Source AI Agent Framework
Microsoft unveils its open-source Agent Framework to streamline AI agent development with enterprise-ready tools and simplified coding.
Microsoft has launched the Microsoft Agent Framework, an open-source SDK designed to simplify AI agent development for developers of all skill levels. The framework combines capabilities from Semantic Kernel (enterprise-ready foundations) and AutoGen (experimental multi-agent orchestration), eliminating previous trade-offs between innovation and stability.
Key Features
The framework introduces four core pillars:
- Open Standards & Interoperability: Supports Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent-to-Agent (A2A) communication, and OpenAPI integration.
- Pipeline for Research: Incorporates advanced orchestration patterns like group chat and debate from AutoGen.
- Extensible by Design: Features connectors to Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Graph, SharePoint, and more, with YAML/JSON configurations.
- Ready for Production: Built-in observability via OpenTelemetry, Azure Monitor integration, and CI/CD compatibility.
Simplified Development
Microsoft highlights the framework's ease of use, with examples demonstrating functional agents built in fewer than 20 lines of code. The framework supports both Python (pip install agent-framework
) and .NET (dotnet add package Microsoft.Agents.AI
).
Enterprise Adoption
Early enterprise adoption is strong, with Microsoft showcasing detailed use cases in their announcement blog post.
Integration & Migration
The framework integrates with Azure AI services and Visual Studio Code via the AI Toolkit extension. Microsoft has also provided migration guides for developers transitioning from Semantic Kernel or AutoGen.
Availability
The preview is available now on GitHub and via package managers. Developers can also watch a 30-minute introduction video by Microsoft.
