APAC businesses are investing in agentic AI, but must address security, compliance, and operational risks to thrive.

Businesses in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region are rapidly adopting agentic AI to stay competitive, with IDC reporting that 70% of APAC businesses expect it to disrupt business models within 18 months. By 2026, over half plan to implement AI agents. However, this shift introduces significant security, operational, and compliance risks.

Key Risks of AI Agent Adoption

  1. Security and Data Privacy: A third of APAC organizations worry about vulnerabilities tied to AI agents.
  2. Operational Risks: Lenovo research reveals only 48% of IT leaders feel confident managing AI risks, with many unprepared for AI-driven insider threats.
  3. Supply Chain Vulnerabilities: Open-source components and poisoned models can expose entire systems to attacks.
  4. Governance Challenges: Black-box decision-making, unsanctioned "shadow AI," and bias in training data create compliance hurdles.

The Quantum Shift in Software Security

Policymakers are demanding full traceability, such as India’s push for mandatory AI bills of materials. Enterprises must now prove agent actions comply with regulations in real time, adding a heavy burden to developers.

Strategies for Sustainable AI Adoption

  1. Create a Trusted AI System of Record: Track all assets (code, prompts, credentials) with cryptographic audit trails.
  2. Hybrid Human-Agent Development: Automate vulnerability remediation while developers focus on governance.
  3. Nurture Agentic Engineers: A new role blending coding, ML, and compliance skills to embed risk mitigation in workflows.

The Path Forward

The rise of AI agents mirrors the open-source revolution, requiring secure software supply chains. APAC enterprises that unify risk management and innovation will lead the next phase of software development.
