Microsoft's new AI-powered tools reduce enterprise application migration from months to days, addressing legacy tech challenges.
Microsoft has introduced AI-powered tools designed to streamline the migration of legacy enterprise applications, reducing the process from eight months to just days. Scott Hunter, Microsoft’s VP of product management for Azure, highlighted the significant time savings these tools offer for updating .NET and Java applications.
The Legacy Challenge
Over 37% of enterprise applications require modernization, according to Hunter. Many organizations face security vulnerabilities and technical debt due to postponed updates. "Most enterprises have acquired companies with outdated tech," Hunter explained, citing old .NET frameworks or Java 8 as common hurdles.
David Mytton, CEO of Arcjet, noted that while AI can speed up migrations for straightforward codebases, challenges remain with UI libraries or database upgrades.
How It Works
The migration process begins with Azure Migrate, which inventories applications, dependencies, and frameworks. "We want a single front door," Hunter emphasized, eliminating the need for multiple tools.
Developers interact with AI agents through GitHub Copilot in environments like Visual Studio Code or JetBrains IDEs. The agents generate migration plans, which developers can review and modify before execution.
