Alibaba launches open-source AI research agent to compete with OpenAI Deep Research
Alibaba's new open-source deep research AI agent claims superior efficiency compared to US proprietary tools and is integrated into Amap and Tongyi FaRui
Alibaba Group Holding has introduced an open-source "deep research" artificial intelligence agent that it claims matches the performance of OpenAI's flagship Deep Research tool while being more efficient. The announcement was made by Alibaba’s AI search development team, Tongyi Lab, in a blog post on Tuesday.
Key Features and Integrations
The new AI agent has been integrated into two of Alibaba's key products:
- Amap (link): Users can leverage the agent's web retrieval capabilities to plan multi-day trips
- Tongyi FaRui: The legal research tool has been enhanced with verified case law retrieval features
Performance Claims
Alibaba highlights that its agent demonstrates "incredible efficiency" with only 30 billion parameters, significantly fewer than the estimated parameter counts of comparable US proprietary tools. This comes as part of Alibaba's rapid AI expansion, having recently launched:
- Qwen-3-Max-Preview (link): The company's first trillion-parameter base model
- Qwen3-Next-80B-A3B (link): A smaller yet more powerful model according to benchmarking firm Artificial Analysis

Industry Context
Deep research agents are AI tools designed for complex web retrieval tasks requiring multiple steps. OpenAI launched the first such agent in February 2025, integrating it into ChatGPT. Other major US tech companies like Google DeepMind have since introduced similar tools.
