CISOs face new challenges securing AI agents in enterprises
AI agents are transforming enterprise security by offering ROI while creating governance and risk challenges for CISOs securing autonomous systems.

AI agents are rapidly being deployed across enterprises to handle security operations, creating both opportunities and new risks for cybersecurity leaders. According to Google Cloud's The ROI of AI 2025 report, 52% of organizations using generative AI have adopted agentic AI.
Security Benefits vs. Governance Challenges
The report highlights significant security improvements:
- 49% of executives report enhanced security posture
- 77% better threat identification
- 61% faster incident resolution
- 53% reduction in security tickets
"AI-powered systems can automatically enrich alerts with contextual data, build timelines, and correlate events from different sources," said Anton Chuvakin of Google Cloud's Office of the CISO.
However, governance remains a major hurdle:
- 34% of executives rank data privacy/security as top priority
- Requires continuous monitoring of business context, regulations and technical workflows
- "Anticipating potential points of failure is the hardest part," notes Marina Kaganovich
Executive Sponsorship Key to Success
The research reveals:
- 78% of organizations with C-suite sponsorship see positive ROI
- Lagging adoption at companies without executive backing
- CISOs must engage senior leaders early in security discussions
Recommended Actions for Security Leaders
- Identify high-value AI security use cases
- Establish formal AI governance policies
- Invest in team training on AI risks/opportunities
- Implement strong cyber hygiene and zero trust frameworks
