Max and Peyton from The Interface initially set out to build an AI agent development tool but ended up creating a Sims-style game for AI agents. The project, which began as a Jupyter Notebook-based system for creating callable AI tools, evolved into an interactive 3D world where agents and humans coexist in real time.
From Text to Interaction
The original concept allowed AI agents to use notebook cells as tools, creating a self-improving system. However, the team found the text-heavy interface dull and envisioned a more engaging way to interact with AI. Inspired by simulation games like RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and SimCity, they built a Unity-based 3D environment where agents react dynamically to their surroundings.
How It Works
The desktop app (built with Tauri and Unity via WebGL) lets users design tile-based rooms where AI agents receive structured observations and take actions that alter the world. Key features include:
- Editable rules: Adjust prompts, decision logic, and chat history handling without rebuilding.
- Tilemap editor: Create custom rooms with events like puzzles, hazards, or interactive objects.
- Multi-provider routing: Supports LiteLLM for API routing, with local model support via Mistral.rs coming soon.
- Community sharing: Users can publish and share custom-designed rooms.
Emergent Gameplay
The unpredictability of AI agents—such as expressing emotions through dance or refusing to speak—makes every interaction unique. The team highlights scenarios like agents negotiating through falling tiles, teleports, or even disco floors as particularly entertaining.
Future Plans
The Interface aims to expand with larger rooms, more in-world tools, and multiplayer hosting. The vision is an open-ended, AI-native sim-game where users can recreate TV shows, design puzzles, or test cooperative strategies. The app is live now, free to play, and supports bringing your own API keys or starting with $10 in credits.
