USTA and IBM launch AI tools at US Open to enhance fan experience
The United States Tennis Association and IBM are introducing AI-powered features, including real-time match analytics and AI-generated commentary, to improve fan engagement and streamline operations at the US Open.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA), in partnership with IBM, is leveraging artificial intelligence to transform the fan experience and operational efficiency at this year's US Open. The collaboration introduces several cutting-edge technologies, including AI-powered match analytics, real-time insights, and automated content generation.
Key AI Features for Fans
- Match Chat: An AI assistant built with IBM watsonx Orchestrate, allowing fans to ask questions about player stats, records, and match details during or after the event.
- Enhanced SlamTracker: Provides real-time win probability updates using AI and historical data.
- AI-Generated Commentary: Post-match insights delivered via automated summaries, boosting content production efficiency by 300%.

Behind the Scenes: AI for Operations
USTA is also using IBM's AI tools to streamline workflows, including:
- Infrastructure management to handle traffic surges (up to 50x normal load).
- Cost optimization and operational resilience during the tournament.
- Content acceleration, enabling faster real-time highlights and player insights.
Brian Ryerson, USTA’s Senior Director of Digital Strategy, emphasized the organization’s long-term tech roadmap: "We identified the hybrid cloud and AI capabilities needed to bring [our vision] to life."
AI in Sports: A Growing Trend
- The NFL used AI-powered dashboards via Amazon QuickSight for the 2025 Scouting Combine.
- Wimbledon debuted a similar Match Chat feature earlier this summer, also powered by IBM.
"AI is reshaping how sports organizations engage with fans and optimize operations," Ryerson noted, highlighting the technology’s dual role in enhancing both fan experiences and backend efficiency.
