AI Agents Fail to Deliver Despite Hype
Despite the hype, AI agents remain largely absent in real-world applications, raising questions about trust and practicality.
For all the fanfare, AI agents are still only conspicuous by their absence. The tech industry has been buzzing with promises of AI agents that can autonomously handle tasks like booking holidays, managing finances, and even grocery shopping. Yet, as John Leonard observed, most of these claims turn out to be proofs-of-concept or rebranded RPA tools rather than genuine breakthroughs.
The Disappearing Act
At Google’s Cloud London event 10 months ago, AI agents were the star of the show. Fast forward to today, and they’ve all but vanished from the conversation. Instead, IT leaders are focusing on more practical and proven AI use cases, such as analytics and customer experience. This shift highlights a growing skepticism about the readiness of AI agents for real-world deployment.

Trust and Data: The Real Barriers
The core issue lies in trust and data access. While AI agents can autonomously retrieve data, their real value depends on accessing privileged internal information. Few CIOs or CISOs are willing to grant third-party tools unrestricted access to their infrastructure. As the article notes, “If you want to implement AI agents at scale, you need to get a handle on your data.” This includes addressing identity, security, and trust concerns.
The Road Ahead
Until these challenges are resolved, AI agents will remain more of a theoretical promise than a practical solution. The industry must move beyond hype and focus on building trust and robust data governance frameworks. As the article concludes, “Bond might operate in the shadows, but if Bob the Bot wants to be useful, he needs to take a very different approach.”
