Grammarly expands into AI-powered desktop agent platform
Grammarly is evolving from grammar correction to a comprehensive AI agent platform, backed by a $1 billion investment, to automate workflows and enhance productivity across applications.
Grammarly, traditionally known for its grammar correction tools, is now transforming into a comprehensive generative AI (genAI) agent platform. This shift is fueled by a recent $1 billion investment from General Catalyst, enabling the company to move beyond grammar recommendations and into automated workflows, document drafting, and project coordination.
Key Developments
- Always-On AI Agents: Grammarly is developing AI technologies that operate seamlessly across work applications, providing context-aware recommendations and automating tasks. For example, an agent could generate draft scorecards from Zoom interview transcripts or consolidate project updates from Slack and Jira.
- Enhanced User Experience: The platform aims to reduce the need for manual prompting by integrating AI directly into the user interface. "We want to create an interface that doesn’t require you to prompt and re-prompt until you get your output," said Noam Lovinsky, Grammarly’s Chief Product Officer.
- Broad Application Support: Grammarly currently supports 500,000+ applications and websites and boasts 40 million users. The new AI tools will maintain this seamless integration, appearing "in the right ways and in the right moments."
Competitive Landscape
Grammarly faces competition from Microsoft and Google, which already offer AI-driven document drafting and automation tools. However, Grammarly’s existing platform and cross-application compatibility could give it an edge. "Grammarly will need to clearly articulate how it’s different and how it fits adjacent to the others," noted Nancy Gohring, Senior Research Director for AI at IDC.
Future Plans
- Model Flexibility: While Grammarly currently uses its own LLMs and commercial AI providers, it may allow users to choose their preferred models in the future.
- Target Audience: The company will focus on knowledge workers rather than niche domains like coding or design.
