Opera introduces Opera Neon, a browser integrating AI agents for task automation, creative workflows, and intent-based navigation, marking a shift toward agentic browsing.

Opera has launched Opera Neon, a groundbreaking browser designed to transcend traditional web navigation by embedding AI agents. These agents interpret user intent, automate tasks, and assist in creative workflows, heralding what Opera calls "agentic browsing"—where the browser actively aids users in achieving goals rather than passively displaying content.

Core AI Features

Neon, developed over several years, introduces three key AI-driven functions:

  1. Chat: A conversational AI assistant embedded directly into the browser, enabling users to query information, receive contextual summaries, or seek clarifications without leaving their current page.
  2. Do: Previously known as Browser Operator, this agent automates routine web tasks like form-filling, travel bookings, and online purchases. Opera emphasizes that these actions are processed locally, enhancing privacy and reducing server reliance.
  3. Make: A generative AI tool that creates websites, reports, code snippets, or visual assets. Complex tasks are handled in a cloud-based virtual machine, allowing asynchronous workflows even when offline.

Hybrid Processing Model

The browser’s dual-processing approach—local for basic tasks and cloud for intensive ones—has sparked user inquiries. One X user asked whether Neon operates in two modes. Opera confirms the hybrid model, balancing efficiency and privacy.

Industry Reactions

Henrik Lexow, Opera’s Senior AI Product Director, stated that Neon is a "collaborative platform" for shaping the future of agentic browsing. Early adopters like Jitendra Gupta, an AI enthusiast, praised the browser on LinkedIn, calling it a leap toward "Web 4.0," where browsers proactively assist users.

Availability

Opera Neon is offered as a premium subscription, with early access via a waitlist at operaneon.com.
