Amazon has created a new group within its Lab126 R&D unit to develop agentic AI for robotics, enhancing warehouse automation with natural language commands.

Amazon has established a new team within its Lab126 research and development unit to focus on agentic artificial intelligence (AI), the company announced Wednesday. The group will develop an AI "framework" for robotics operations, often referred to as "physical AI."

Key Details:

  • Lab126, known for creating the Kindle and Echo, will house the new AI team.
  • The group aims to build systems that allow robots to "hear, understand, and act on natural language commands," transforming them into "flexible, multi-talented assistants" in warehouses.
  • This move aligns with Amazon's broader push into agentic AI, which goes beyond chatbots to perform multistep, complex tasks autonomously.

Broader Context:

  • Amazon recently released a web browser-based AI agent and formed a similar team in its cloud unit.
  • The company's Alexa+, launched in March 2025, also incorporates agentic capabilities.

Why It Matters:

Agentic AI represents the next frontier in automation, enabling robots to handle dynamic tasks with minimal human intervention. Amazon's investment underscores its commitment to leading in physical AI applications, particularly in logistics and warehousing.
