IBM advances AI agents for enterprise automation and integration
IBM is developing AI agents that execute across enterprise systems, focusing on orchestration, integration, and governance to enhance operational effectiveness.
AI agents are evolving from copilots to autonomous systems capable of driving outcomes across enterprises. IBM Corp. is at the forefront of this shift, developing AI agents that integrate with both legacy and modern tools to orchestrate processes across complex enterprise infrastructures, according to Ritika Gunnar, General Manager for Data and Artificial Intelligence at IBM.
IBM’s Ritika Gunnar discusses how agent frameworks are reshaping enterprise automation.
From Assistance to Execution
Gunnar emphasized that AI is now entering an era where it can "do for you," marking a significant shift in enterprise technology. "This is a very powerful new chapter," she said. "We’re hearing that from a lot of our clients and the use cases they’re driving."
Orchestration and Integration
IBM’s strategy involves blending agentic functionality into existing systems rather than replacing entire software stacks. This approach includes leveraging fixed workflows and enabling agent-based enhancements, allowing customers to scale into full orchestration when needed. "Being able to execute across agents that you’ve built ... that exist in your third-party systems is important," Gunnar noted.
Prebuilt AI Agents
To accelerate adoption, IBM has unveiled a lineup of prebuilt AI agents for domains such as human resources, sales, and procurement, with plans to expand into customer care and finance. These agents can be customized and orchestrated using IBM’s frameworks. "This is really where the power is ... how do you orchestrate all those different layers?" Gunnar asked.
Unlocking Unstructured Data
IBM’s watsonx offerings aim to bridge IT and business needs by enabling users to build intelligent AI agents grounded in enterprise data. "We believe that we’re going to see an explosion of the 90% of unstructured data that today has been untapped," Gunnar said. "You’re untapping a whole new set of intelligence that’s now available."
