AWS Releases Open Source SDK to Simplify AI Agent Development
AWS has open-sourced its Strands Agents SDK, a toolkit designed to streamline the creation of AI agents, now available on GitHub.
Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) has announced the release of Strands Agents SDK, an open-source toolkit aimed at simplifying the development of artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The SDK, now available on GitHub, was initially developed to support AWS's internal teams but has been made public to benefit the broader developer community.
Key Features of Strands Agents SDK
-
Multi-LLM Support: The SDK supports large language models (LLMs) from various providers, including Amazon Bedrock and Anthropic PBC's API. It also integrates with open-source tools like Ollama and LiteLLM, which provide access to over 100 cloud-based LLM APIs.
-
Prebuilt Tools: The toolkit includes more than 20 prebuilt tools for AI agents, such as the Retrieve tool, which leverages AWS's Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases to automatically find relevant tools for processing prompts.
-
Multi-Agent Collaboration: Developers can create applications that use multiple AI agents to perform tasks. AWS plans to enhance this feature with support for the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, enabling agents to coordinate by exchanging data.
-
Data Management: The SDK efficiently manages data processed by AI agents, storing user prompts, agent responses, and application outputs while filtering unnecessary data to reduce infrastructure costs.
Internal Adoption and Future Plans
AWS has already deployed Strands Agents SDK in several of its services, including Amazon Q Developer, AWS Glue, and Amazon VPC Reachability Analyzer. According to AWS Senior Principal Engineer Clare Liguori, the SDK has significantly reduced the time required to develop and deploy new AI agents, from months to days or weeks.
Liguori emphasized the SDK's flexibility, stating, "Strands can orchestrate across multiple agents in a variety of multi-agent collaboration patterns. By modeling sub-agents and multi-agent collaboration as tools, the model-driven approach enables the model to reason about if and when a task requires a defined workflow, graph, or swarm of sub-agents."
Community and Open-Source Impact
The release of Strands Agents SDK underscores AWS's commitment to open-source innovation in AI. By making the toolkit publicly available, AWS aims to empower developers to build sophisticated AI agents with greater ease and efficiency.
