IBM has launched the z17 mainframe, engineered with AI capabilities, featuring the Telum II processor and over 300 patents, designed for real-time transaction scoring and multi-model AI workloads.

IBM has officially announced the IBM z17, the latest iteration of its iconic mainframe, now fully engineered with AI capabilities across hardware, software, and systems operations. The new system, powered by the IBM Telum II processor, expands beyond transactional AI to enable innovative workloads, marking a significant leap in enterprise computing.

Key Features of IBM z17

  • AI at Scale: Designed to score 100% of transactions in real-time, the z17 processes 50% more AI inference operations daily than its predecessor, the z16.
  • Multi-Model AI: Supports over 250 AI use cases, including loan risk mitigation, medical image analysis, and retail crime prevention.
  • Patents and Collaboration: Developed over five years with input from 100+ clients and 300+ patent applications filed with the USPTO.

AI and Performance Enhancements

The z17’s AI inferencing is powered by the Telum II processor, featuring a second-generation on-chip AI accelerator with:

  • 40% increased cache
  • 450 billion daily inferencing operations
  • 1-millisecond response time

Expanding AI Capabilities

  • IBM Spyre Accelerator: Expected in Q4 2025, this PCIe card will bring Generative AI to the mainframe, enabling assistants and leveraging enterprise data.
  • AI-Powered Tools: Includes IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z and IBM watsonx Assistant for Z, integrated with Z Operations Unite for AI-driven incident resolution.

Security and Storage

  • Cyber Defense: Enhanced with AI-powered threat detection and HashiCorp’s secrets management for hybrid cloud security.
  • IBM Storage DS8000: 10th-generation storage solution optimized for z17, ensuring agile data performance and security.

Availability

  • IBM z17: Launches June 18, 2025.
  • IBM Spyre Accelerator: Expected in Q4 2025.
  • z/OS 3.2: Previewed for Q3 2025, supporting AI hardware acceleration and modern data access.

Industry Impact

Ross Mauri, General Manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE, emphasized:

"AI will only be as valuable as the infrastructure it runs on. With z17, we’re bringing AI to the core of the enterprise."

The z17 is poised to transform industries by enabling secured, cost-effective AI deployment at scale, leveraging untapped enterprise data.
