AI Agents

Atlassian has introduced AI agents designed to automate various software engineering tasks, enhancing efficiency across the development lifecycle.

Atlassian has announced a series of AI-powered agents aimed at automating tasks across the software development lifecycle. The new tools, unveiled at the Atlassian Team’25 conference, are now available in beta. These additions to the Rovo portfolio include:

  • Code Planner: Converts Jira tickets into technical plans.
  • Code Writing Agents: Automate code generation.
  • Code Review Agent: Ensures quality and compliance.
  • Deployment Agent: Streamlines the deployment process.

Enhanced Search and Development Tools

Atlassian is also launching a context-aware search engine that allows developers to use natural language queries to locate source code, Jira issues, documentation, and technical discussions. Additionally, the company introduced Rovo Studio App, a tool for building AI agents and automations using a combination of natural language and traditional coding techniques.

Developer-Centric Approach

Chirag Shah, Head of Product for Developer Solutions at Atlassian, emphasized that these tools are designed to augment, not replace, developers. The goal is to reduce manual tasks while maintaining transparency and trust in the code. Shah noted that many developers struggle to debug AI-generated code due to a lack of insight into its creation process.

Industry Perspective

Mitch Ashley, VP of DevOps and Application Development at The Futurum Group, highlighted that Rovo Studio App leverages knowledge graph technologies to provide contextualized data for AI agents. This approach enhances efficiency and accuracy across the development lifecycle.

Growing Adoption of AI in Development

A Futurum Research survey revealed that:

  • 41% of respondents plan to use generative AI for code generation, review, and testing.
  • 39% intend to adopt AI models based on machine learning.
  • 35% will apply AI to IT operations.

The Future of AI in Software Engineering

Atlassian’s initiative reflects a broader trend of integrating AI agents into development workflows. The company plans to expand its AI portfolio to automate more tasks, enabling developers to focus on creative problem-solving rather than repetitive manual work.
